Flood defences in York put to the test
The Environment Agency say river levels have been rising over the last few days

Residents and business owners in York are being urged to tune into flood warnings after facing more heavy rain last night and throughout today. The Met officer has issued a yellow weather warning for rain.
The Environment agency have told us: 'River levels in North Yorkshire have been rising and remain high following steady rainfall over recent days. We have issued flood alerts and warnings and closed flood gates, including the newly installed gate at Clementhorpe, which is part of our ÂŁ45m investment in flood defences in York. The recently upgraded Foss barrier is also in operation, reducing flood risk to 2,000 properties in York along the River Foss.
“River levels are expected to peak in York later on today (Saturday 14) and with further rain forecast we expect to issue further flood alerts and warnings across the region. We encourage people to check their flood risk and sign up for free flood warnings at gov.uk.”
