A community wellbeing and mental health hub is set to open its doors in Acomb Garth, York, today (13 October), offering a lifeline to adults seeking support close to home. The Yor Community Wellbeing Hub launches just days after World Mental Health Day and aims to make vital services more accessible for local residents.

Backed by over £2.4 million in funding from NHS England, the new facility brings together staff from the NHS, City of York Council, and voluntary service partners to provide a calm, welcoming environment for anyone aged 18 or over in need of mental health or wellbeing support. The hub will be open six days a week at first—Monday and Tuesday from 9am to 5pm, and Wednesday to Saturday from 8am to 8pm—with plans to eventually move to a 24/7 service.

The Yor Community Wellbeing Hub is the second of its kind in York, with a third planned for the future. By offering support in the heart of local communities, organisers hope to make it easier for people to get the help they need, without having to travel across the city.

"Compassionate and caring support"

Professor Lynne Gabriel OBE and Dr Steve Wright, Co-Chairs of the York Mental Health Partnership, praised the collaborative effort behind the project. “The new mental health and wellbeing hub at Acomb Garth is an exciting neighbourhood-based development, offering a friendly and welcoming place and space,” they said. “We know from a pilot phase that people really value being able to access local, compassionate and caring support.”

Brian Cranna, Director of Operations and Transformation at the Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV), added: “We’ve listened to the views of local people to really understand what will make a difference to them and to make sure that the Hub building and the services offered meet the needs of the local community. It’s wonderful to be able to open the doors to people for the first time.”

Councillor Lucy Steels-Walshaw, Executive Member for Health and Adult Social Care at City of York Council, said the new hub would give people in west York the same fast and effective support already available at Clarence Street in the north of the city, with a third hub planned to cover all areas.

The opening of the Acomb Garth hub is part of the Connecting our City programme, supporting the NHS’s push to move more care into community settings. The team behind the hub includes people with lived experience, carers and local residents, ensuring the service is shaped by those who need it most.
