Warning to keep dogs away from seal pups resting on the Yorkshire Coast
More young seals are here to escape the bad weather and winds
Marine life volunteers are warning against dogs or beachgoers disturbing seal pups, who're resting Yorkshire Coast beaches.
Volunteers at British Divers Marine Life Rescue say they've seen an increase in young seals in the area in order to escape the bad weather and winds.
Emily Mayman is the Yorkshire co-ordinator for the group: "Understandably many people do think that they are supposed to be in water, generally we just ask that if people are concerned about them they just give us a call, keep their dogs away, keep their children away, keep a respectable distance and don't put water on them."
"If we are called out to them we need ideally for them to be on a beach so we can access them if the animal is actually swimming then realistically there is not a lot we can do and unfortunately if they are injured it reduces how much we can help them if they are chased away."
"We've had unfortunately members of the public who have picked them up and physically thrown them back in or have thrown stones at them or kicked them, or deliberately set their dog on them to try and get them back into the water. We do get a lot of people on the beaches and unfortunately it does mean it happens quite a lot."
