A fire has completely destroyed a historic, thatched pub near Helmsley.

Early reports suggest the blaze broke out at The Star Inn at Harome last night.

The building - which dates back to the 14th century - is situated on the High Street.

At the peak of the fire, nine engines were tackling the flames overnight.

Owner and chef Andrew Pern took to social media in the early hours, to illustrate the devastation of the fire:

A statement from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue read:

'Fire crews from Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside and Pickering along with the aerial ladder platform from Huntington attended a property with the thatched roof on fire.

'At it’s peak the incident had 9 appliances, 1 aerial ladder platform, 1 water bowser, 1 welfare unit and an incident command unit in attendance.

'Crews worked with main jets and hose reel jets to contain the fire and the aerial ladder platform was deployed to removed thatch from the roof.

'The incident is still ongoing and crews are still working to extinguish the fire.'
