One of York's top attractions has confirmed visitors will still have to wear face coverings and social distance even after legal restrictions lift on July 19.

Bosses at the Jorvik Viking Centre said customers feel safer with masks on, and families and groups will still have to pre-book a visit.

Director of attractions Sarah Maltby said the measures also improve staff safety and offers a reassurance to vulnerable ticket holders.

“We are incredibly proud of being an inclusive attraction, and as such, we want visitors who might worry about the lifting of restrictions – including the immuno-supressed, vulnerable people and those who have not yet been vaccinated – to feel safe when visiting,” Sarah said.

The rules are also going to remain in place for two other attractions run by the Jorvik Group, Barley Hall and Jorvik Dig.

Health secretary Sajid Javid confirmed on Monday that legal restrictions will lift next week, but people will be encouraged to wear masks in crowded places.
