TIER has seen over 20,000 riders in York complete over 100,000 journeys on its e-scooters and e-bikes since it partnered with the city a year ago.

These e-vehicle journeys have replaced an estimated 16,000 car trips in the city during this period, leading to a six tonne reduction in CO2 emissions.

TIER has grown its e-scooter and e-bike fleet in York from 50 to over 550 in the last year, during which time it has seen over 20,000 riders complete over 100,000 journeys, covering around 445,000km. These journeys have replaced an estimated 16,000 car trips in the city over the last 12 months, leading to a six tonne reduction in CO2 emissions.

The operator has recently opened new routes and now provides access to popular tourist destinations, university campuses, York Hospital and York’s vaccination centre.

TIER says: "_This growth of operations has also given more York residents a greener way to get to work, and commuters are clearly embracing the new transport options. TIER saw a 20% month-on-month increase in trips in September, along with a 43% jump in people using e-scooters between 7am and 9am"._

One regular TIER rider, Matthew Lewis, says the service has had a hugely positive impact on his life. The O2 store manager said: _"_TIER e-scooters have helped me save an hour a day on my commute to work, whilst allowing me to do my bit in saving the environment. Before the trial started last year, it would take me 35 minutes by car to get to the city centre and park, now it takes me just 10 minutes.

"_The additional time I have back in my day is hugely valuable, allowing me to focus more time on my activities outside of work, which includes running Menfulness, a men’s mental health support group in York."_

Commenting, Jessica Hall, City Manager for York, said: _"_TIER e-scooters have been hugely popular in York since the scheme launched a year ago and are still being embraced by locals and visitors as a greener, more convenient transport option.

"_Our e-scooters have also brought other benefits to York, such as reducing air pollution and easing congestion. We look forward to continuing to work closely with the council and residents as the trials extend to Spring 2022."_

Cllr Paula Widdowson, Executive Member for Environment and Climate Change added: "Transport in York accounts for over 27% of city-wide carbon emissions and as a Council we are committed to reducing emissions and improving air quality across the city. This is why it’s essential we help provide as many different, convenient forms of transport to enable residents, commuters and visitors to get around York sustainably.

_"_The past year has seen a significant shift in how and why we all travel around the city. Working from home and shopping online has meant for some that more of their journeys are shorter trips across the city – an ideal scenario to walk, cycle or hire an e-scooter. The TIER fleet has become a staple part of getting around the city for many, providing over 100,000 trips this past year.

"_We’re proud that York can play an important role in the ongoing Department for Transport research, exploring the use of e-scooters and alternative forms of sustainable transport and welcomed the extension of this trial back in June. Our work with TIER combined with our investment in active travel infrastructure is supporting our ambitions to make York an even cleaner and greener place to live, work and visit."_
