Rail passengers have faced "major disruption" during a busy pre-Christmas weekend.
Network Rail said a "defective cable caused a signalling failure affecting several platforms at Leeds station" at around 10.50am on Sunday, with engineers restoring power by 1.20pm.
London North Eastern Railway (LNER) posted on X on Sunday morning:
"We are experiencing major disruption across the LNER route due to a person being hit by a train between Edinburgh and Berwick-upon-Tweed, and a fault with the signalling system at Leeds."
In an update at 1.54pm on Sunday, the train operating company said signalling had been restored at Leeds and lines were open between Edinburgh and Berwick-upon-Tweed.
However, LNER added that "services are still subject to delays and cancellations while our train service recovers".
Customers can use their existing tickets to travel either on Monday or Tuesday.
LNER said customers could also book new seat reservations online if their original train was cancelled.
TransPennine Express also reported delays and cancellations to its trains between Manchester Victoria, Leeds and York.
A Network Rail spokesperson said: "At around 10.50am, a defective cable caused a signalling failure affecting several platforms at Leeds station.
"Engineers attended site and restored power by 1.20pm.
"Some services were cancelled or delayed, and passengers are advised to continue checking before they travel.
"We apologise for the disruption and thank passengers for their patience."
