New data has revealed nearly a third of North Yorkshire children in care have been rehoused more than 20 miles from home this year.

These figures have come from the Department for Education, who have drawn attention to a significant rise in children being moved from their local area in recent years.

In the past decade, there's been a 62% rise in the number of children in care being moved away from their local area.

The research has shown that in England by March this year, 17,630 children in care had been moved more than 20 miles away from home.

This makes up over 21% of all children in care.

Katharine Sacks-Jones, Chief Executive of Become, the national charity for children in care and young care leavers, tells us:

"What young people tell us is that these moves are extremely problematic for them.

"It causes disruption to their education, it breaks those vital relationships with friends and brothers and sisters.

"It can leave them feeling really lonely and isolated.

"It's a huge problem and we think here at Become that we shouldn't be placing children in different parts of the country.

"We should be doing everything possible to keep children close to the people and the places that matter to them."
