Plans to revamp Malton and Norton's skatepark are moving to the next stage following a vote by Norton Town Council.

Earlier this month it had been feared that funding would be withdrawn from the facilities.

However, local campaigner Ryan Swain says Norton Town Council voted in favour of moving ahead with a refurbishment project on Monday night: "I'm delighted to say that we've got the thumbs up and been granted permission to take the campaign to refurbish the halfpipe to the next stage of a Malton and Norton Area Partnership project.

"Out of 12 votes (on Norton Town Council - on Monday evening) there were 8 in favour; 3 against and 1 abstaining.

"I feel absolutely overwhelmed by the vote, but also the amount of support that we had at the meeting from members of the public and local businesses.

"We've worked relentlessly around the clock to make this happen. It's been hurdle after hurdle; challenge after challenge.

"The votes in favour have faith in this positive community project which is lead by the community for the community.

"The plan is to form a committee with MNAP, and on the 2nd June we'll have our first Zoom meeting. We'll then plan what to do with getting the ramp stripped and inspected.

"Once the ramp has been stripped and checked, then we can go ahead to Stage 2: getting the other fabricators, joiners and businesses involved in relaying and resurfacing the halfpipe back up to its original standard."
