Shell safely detonated in York

North Yorkshire Police guarded an area of Walmgate Stray in York after an unexploded shell was discovered yesterday.

A member of the public found the item using a metal detector.

The MOD carried out a controlled explosion, just before 7am.

Prior to the explosion a North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Apologies in advance if anyone gets an earlier awakening than usual!”
