UPDATED: Man arrested after serious sexual assault in York

Police say it took place in the early hours of Thursday (16 June).

A 18 year-old man's been arrested in connection with a serious sexual assault on a woman in York.

It happened in the early hours of this morning in Memorial Gardens off Leeman Road.

The incident was reported at 4.41am today.

The victim is receiving specialist support while police enquiries continue - the man remains in police custody.

The location remains partially cordoned off to the public.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson told us:

"Witnesses or anyone with information are urged to call North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 1, and speak to the Force Control Room.

"Please quote reference number NYP-16062022-0058 when providing details."
