Selby's new collection service praised for rise in recycling rates
The wheeled bin service saw an increase in recycling capacity of 150 litres per household per month from 330 litres to 480 litres.
Selby District Council’s new wheeled bin refuse service has been hailed a success after new figures show a rise in recycling.
In April 2020, the kerbside sort recycling service was changed to a wheeled bin service with one bin for paper and card, and one for mixed glass, cans and plastic.
The wheeled bin service saw an increase in recycling capacity of 150 litres per household per month from 330 litres to 480 litres.
During the first year, tonnages increased by almost 30% from 160.24kg to 206.76kg per household.
There was also an increase of dry recycling tonnage of 37.97% or 2,295 tonnes. In comparison, the six other local authorities in North Yorkshire saw an overall average increase in dry recycling tonnage of 6.66% or 465 tonnes.
Councillor Tim Grogan, Selby District Council's Lead Executive Member for Health and Culture, said: "Before introducing this new service we consulted with residents and of the 6,700 responses there was overwhelming support for the change.
"The service and investment in a new fleet has resulted in an increased recycling rate and the capacity to accommodate a 13% increase in waste arising during the pandemic, which led to the temporary closure of the HWRCs, homeworking, and home schooling for many.
"It has enabled us to maintain collection services during a prolonged period of disruption, complying with Covid-19 legislation and best practice. These improvements have created a robust and flexible service which has been able to cope with the additional demands of the pandemic.
"We would expect the overall recycling rate to increase again during the next year, as residual waste tonnages return to pre-Covid levels. These figures are very impressive and I would like to thank everyone who has done their bit by using the new recycling facilities.
"I would also like to thank our waste contractors, Urbaser, for their hard work and dedication in working through incredibly difficult circumstances to make this service change such a success."
