Crowds congregated on Church Street on Saturday

Senior councillors claim scenes in York seen on Saturday night (26 September) puts us ALL at greater risk.

In a video posted on social media, dozens of people were seen congregating on Church Street.

It's after bars and restaurants shut their doors at 10 o'clock.

City of York Council says it's working with partners in the city to ensure it doesn't happen it again.

North Yorkshire Police were called to the scene to disperse the crowds.

The force has also issued a statement.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said:

“When dealing with the public, our officers adopt the four E’s approach; engage, explain, encourage and as a last resort will use enforcement.

“In this case, officers attended the scene and encouraged the group to disperse. No arrests were made and the group was dispersed by 10.27pm.

“Everyone needs to be mindful of the risks associated by not social distancing, and we would continue to ask everyone to work together in order to keep people across the city of York safe”.
