Disability campaigners say it's making the centre difficult to access

Many people who are blind or disabled have been telling us it's a nightmare to get around York now so many cafes have outdoor seating.

The City Council is going to review the rules about allowing chairs and tables to be put out on the pavement.

Many businesses argue having the extra space brings in much needed revenue.

But for Glynis Garner who has limited vision it's making life much harder " Since COVID things have changed quite significantly, York City Centre is quite inaccessible for me, I feel a lot less confident going round and I feel that the streets are cluttered'.

Cllr Ashley Mason, Executive Member for Economy and Strategic Planning at York City Council says “During the early stages of the pandemic, the ability to swiftly award cafe pavement licences enabled many businesses to continue trading during what was an incredibly challenging time.

"Whilst we recognise the continued importance of these licences to many businesses, it’s clear that there are access issues we need to address.

“We remain committed to the long-term vision of the city centre, with outdoor cafe culture playing a part in the success of our economy, but the current city centre infrastructure is not yet ready for this vision to become a reality. As we enter the post-COVID-19 period we must revaluate and take away the lessons learned to support the city centre and businesses in the long term."
