Firefighters in North Yorkshire were called out to reports of a horse stranded in a flooded field in Ripon last night... that turned out to be a statue.

A concerned walker rang 999 fearing an animal had become trapped, but firefighters discovered it was a World War One memorial.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Group Handler Bob Hoskins tweeted: "An officer trotted off to check out the situation & discovered a statue of a horse in the middle of the field."

"There was “Neigh” further assistance required on this occasion."

The statue of the soldier leading his horse stands near the River Ure, and has been in the field since 2018.
