Richmond to benefit from £500,000 road improvement scheme
Work on the project is due to begin next week
Richmond is to benefit from a £500,000 road improvement scheme.
The main route through the historic market town of Richmond is set to undergo an extensive improvement scheme which is being funded by a national scheme to improve road safety and tackle congestion.
North Yorkshire Council’s highways team will be resurfacing and reinstating road markings on the A6108 in Richmond, as well as carrying out drainage works.
The work will stretch along Darlington Road, to the west of the roundabout with Gilling Road, Frenchgate, Pottergate, Queens Road, and a section of Victoria Road.
The works, which will be carried out in two phases, are being financed by £500,000 from the Department for Transport’s Safer Roads Fund.
They are due to begin on Monday, August 12, and will be carried out under a full road closure between 7pm and midnight for 19 days.
North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for highways and transport, Cllr Keane Duncan, said:
“We are pleased to be able to deliver such a major road improvement scheme in Richmond, thanks to the Government’s Safer Roads Fund.
“The fund has allowed us to carry out key schemes elsewhere in recent years, such as junction improvements, the installation of mini-roundabouts and resurfacing on the A684 at Patrick Brompton, Hawes and Leyburn.
“The Richmond works are another example of how we are improving our road network for the benefit of residents, commuters and the hundreds of thousands of visitors to our beautiful county.”
The Safer Roads Fund aims to address issues on the 50 A-roads identified as being the most dangerous in the country. A total of £100 million has been committed to reduce the amount of fatal and serious collisions along these roads.
In Richmond, the first phase will run until Wednesday, August 28, from the roundabout with Gilling Road to the roundabout with Dundas Street and Lidl.
The second phase will begin on Thursday, August 29, and run until Friday, September 6, between the roundabout with Dundas Street and Lidl, and Victoria Road.
Cllr Stuart Parsons, who represents the Richmond division on North Yorkshire Council, added:
“These essential improvements will be welcome news for everybody who travels through the town centre.
“This well-used route is in need of repair, so we are pleased to receive the funding for the scheme which will resolve the potholes.
“We appreciate the works will cause a level of disruption but hope this will be reduced by taking place in the evening. We are asking the public for their patience over the coming weeks.”
A signed diversion will be in place during the works and on-site personnel will manage access to properties and businesses within the closure. Pedestrian access will be maintained.
