There is concern many parents will struggle to afford a new pair

A pop up event is happening in York today to give out upcycled school shoes to families who might not be able to afford them.

Krissy Wainwright who own the 22 Kicks sneaker shop has been collecting donations throughout the holiday.

Now she's repaired and cleaned them they are being given out at City Screen.

"Parents can come down and they can take anything they want, there is no questions asked, all that we say is please taken what you need, so we can help as many families as we can."

I think there is still quite a big stigma around wearing second hand shoes, whether that's trainers or school shoes. Unlike clothing, if you buy a t-shirt of a pair of jeans, you just put them in the wash. There is a little bit more to it with the footwear and I think that puts people off sometimes, buy second hand."
