Police say they're investigating a fire which broke out at a shop in Selby on Saturday afternoon and caused 'extensive damage'.

The blaze broke out at the McColl’s convenience store on Barwic Parade at about 1.30pm.

Officers say no staff or customers were injured, and no arrests have been made.

Firefighters say a number of crews including an aerial ladder platform attended the fire, and the building was well alight when they got there.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service have said the cause of the fire is unknown, but may have been a discarded cigarette.

Meanwhile police are requesting the public’s assistance to help establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

They're keen to hear from any customers who were in the store at the time, particularly a man who initially alerted staff to the fire in the back yard of the premises.

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation should contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2, and ask for Claire Hudson.
