Network Rail warns train passengers of delays around York over Christmas
It says it'll be carrying out "crucial work" to improve railway lines around the station
Network Rail has warned train passenger of disruption as track work takes place around York station between Christmas and New Year.
The work, which includes new signalling equipment and heaters to melt snow, will begin on December 24th and run through to January 2nd.
Some trains may be diverted, meaning journeys take longer than normal, and some replacement bus services will be running.
Network Rail also said parking spaces will be reduced at the Marygate car park as a result of the work.
It's come at the same time as planned strike action by the RMT union, with walkouts set for 13th-14th, 16th-17th December, and the 3rd-4th and 6th-7th of January.
Sam MacDougall, Operations Director for Network Rail’s East Coast route said: “Our teams will be out working hard this Christmas to provide an improved railway for passengers.
“The work at York is crucial to keep trains running reliably and smoothly for years to come. Our engineering work and the impact of planned industrial action will mean changes to some services, so passengers are urged to plan ahead and check before travelling.”
A spokesperson on behalf of train operators on the route said: “These key upgrades at York will mean changes to services over the festive period and passengers should check their journey before travelling via National Rail Enquires or their train operator.
“We are working hard to keep people moving this Christmas, with rail replacement services and diversion routes, but this means your journey will take longer and may be busier than usual.”
