Closing Doncaster Sheffield Airport "bad news for North Yorkshire businesses"
A Selby taxi firm say they already had airport runs booked in for next year
North Yorkshire taxi drivers are calling for the Government to step in to save Doncaster Sheffield Airport.
It was announced yesterday it will close with the last flight expected to take off in early November.
Richard Atkinson runs Selby Air Travel. He already had airport runs booked in for next year and is hoping holiday makers will re-arrange. "All their holidays are going to be affected, obviously they are going to have to rebook and reschedule and there are going to be costs involved with going further afield to a different airport."
He also says it costs drivers more to park at bigger airports which he explains will lead to "significant cost increases for the customer, less choice, it's only going to result in one thing and that is prices going up. So let's hope the airport can be saved."
The future of the airport had been under review after the Peel Group, who own it, said the commercial viability of the site had become unattainable.
In a statement they said "Regretfully, no tangible proposals have been received regarding the ownership of the airport or which address the fundamental lack of financial viability. The high fixed costs associated with running a safe, regulated airport, together with recent events materially reducing prospective future aviation income streams, mean that a break-even business plan cannot be identified for the foreseeable future."
The group say flights are set to wind down from the 31st of October.
