A North Yorkshire charity say they have seen a rise in the number of older people being abused by their children or grandchildren.

IDAS which offers specialist support to victims is trying to raise awareness of the issue.

They are running a training session today to help people spot the warning signs.

Carmel Offord is from the Charity and says elderly people are especially vulnerable as many are already isolated "it can be harder for them to access the technology that other people might find much easier such as the internet and where they could find information to unpick the abuse. They might also have grown up with attitudes and beliefs that normalise abusive behaviours."

Their training awareness session is part of Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day – or WEAAD – is held on 15th June every year, across the world. It is the globally recognised day to highlight the abuse and neglect of older people, helping us to act against it.

WEAAD was started by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) in June 2006, and was officially recognised by the United Nations in 2011.
