There is concern over the number of men in our region drinking more than the recommended amount of alcohol per week.

NHS data suggests almost a third across Yorkshire and the Humber are in that category - one of the highest levels in the country.

This Alcohol Awareness Week, the alcohol charity Drinkaware is urging people to take a quick and easy ā€œDrinking Checkā€ and ensure they are not putting their health at risk by unknowingly overconsuming ā€“ especially as the summer season and summer holidays come into full swing.

Karen Tyrell is from Harrogate and is the CEO.

"We are used to regularly checking our eyesight or going to the dentist, so we should be doing the same for our drinking. Taking the Drinkaware Drinking Check is free and only takes a few minutes, you can do it in the time it takes to boil the kettle.

"It is a simple way to ensure your drinking is not putting your health at serious risk and provides advice to help you moderate and keep within the low risk drinking guidelines.

"Whether you're thinking about having a drink to celebrate or commiserate over the next few days, why not take the Drinking Check today."

"Do go and talk to a health care professional if you are worried, go and talk to your doctor, go and talk to somebody else in the NHS and ask for support and of course in every Town and City in the Country there is free help and support as well.

"People think I'm just not going to think too hard about how much I am drinking and we would be saying let's get these conversations about alcohol a bit more out into the open, this is something that should be easy to talk about with your friends and family and loved ones."
