An extension to a community for people living with complex needs, like dementia, has been completed in York.

34 new homes have been built at Marjorie Waite Court, an independent living community off Burton Stone Lane in Clifton.

The homes, including 30 apartments and four bungalows, are designed to allow people aged 60 and over to live independently, but with access to additional support from carers.

All of the properties are wheelchair friendly and are connected to a warden call system. Some have been designed with dementia sufferers in mind.

The development also included a new community hall and café serving hot meals and drinks .

Cllr Carol Runciman, from City of York Council, said:

“I’m delighted with this extension to Marjorie Waite Court. Residents have told us they want to live independently and well in their own home for as long as possible, and this is a very welcome addition to our Older Person’s Accommodation Programme.

“Residents’ needs will be met by a 24/7 on-site team delivering personal care and support plans tailored to residents’ care and support needs.

"Those plans, like this accommodation, are designed to help people retain their independence, and promote better health and wellbeing.”
