Police in York have arrested a 13-year-old boy after a chase involving a modified mountain bike that was being used as a motorbike.

Traffic officers say the rider sped through Ratcliffe Street at up to 45 miles an hour and didn’t stop when asked.

The pursuit ended after police caught up with him and the boy was arrested on several offences.

A North Yorkshire police spokesperson said, "Whilst on patrol on Ratcliffe Street in York at around 1.15pm on Wednesday (12 November), our traffic cops came across a suspicious modified mountain bike.

"The mountain bike had been adapted to function through the use of throttle, not pedals, so it falls into the category of a motorcycle.

"A pursuit was authorised after the rider refused to pull over for our officers. It accelerated to speeds of up to 45mph, despite the road being subject to a 30mph speed limit.

"One of the police bikers was able to make a tactical contact with the motorcycle bringing the incident to a quick and safe conclusion.

"A 13-year-old local boy was arrested on suspicion of driving with no insurance, no licence, failing to stop for police, and for riding with no helmet.

"He's been released under investigation while enquiries continue."
