A man who killed a new father with one punch outside a North Yorkshire pub has been jailed for more than five years.

22-year-old Benjamin Calvert pleaded guilty to manslaughter, after assaulting Alan Barefoot on Thirsk Market Place in October 2021.

Police said Mr. Barefoot had been "enjoying the first night out" since the recent birth of his daughter.

He had been asked to leave the pub after getting into an argument, which then spilled onto the street.

Calvert punched Mr. Barefoot in the side of the head, who fell to the floor and was knocked unconscious.

He was rushed to hospital but later died of a head injury.

Coming to terms with her loss, Alan’s partner Charlotte who called him by his nickname Bezzy, said: “It has been extremely hard dealing with the whole experience. All of our daughter’s firsts will be missed by Bezzy, her first birthday was definitely the hardest and this will be the same for Bezzy’s other children.

"The future is going to be very different for us both and we will have to learn how to cope with our new future.
