A man from Doncaster who blew up cash machines across the country in order to steal thousands has been jailed for 11 years.

George Tunney was part of a gang who travelled across Yorkshire and the Midlands targeting ATMs with explosives before stealing the cash inside them.

Police say Tunney started his raids in Doncaster and Hull in January 2020, where he tried and failed to get cash from inside four machines.

However, he caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to business owners after blowing them up.

Tunney then managed to steal £57,000 from a cash machine in Nether Poppleton, near to York.

A second spate of attempts began just weeks later in March, with raids carried out in Leicestershire, Harrogate and Doncaster.

Tunney was finally arrested after a high speed chase around the York Outer ring road, where a stolen car was driven down the wrong side of the A64 and hit a barrier.

The 24-year-old was then found hiding in a tree and was arrested alongside two other people.

He'd only been released from HMP Hull when he was taken into custody again.

A judge has now sentenced Tunney to 11 years behind bars, and he's also been given an 8 year driving ban.
