A North Yorkshire Police dog named Enzo was instrumental in the arrest of a 49-year-old man following a high-speed chase in Selby.

The pursuit unfolded in the early hours of Tuesday 23rd September 2025 when a white Fiat 500 raised the suspicions of a patrolling officer in Gowthorpe, on the outskirts of Selby, at 12.47am. The driver’s erratic reaction to the police vehicle led to a dangerous chase through the area.

Officers reported the car reached speeds of 90mph, ignored red lights, and crossed solid white lines. In response, North Yorkshire Police deployed additional resources, including the Roads Policing Group and the Dog Unit, to manage the escalating situation.

The chase came to an end at 12.55am when the Fiat’s tyres were deflated using a stinger device, forcing the vehicle to stop back in Gowthorpe. The driver fled on foot but was caught within a minute at 12.56am thanks to the efforts of police dog Enzo, who was deployed by his handler. This marked Enzo’s first live operation since completing his training.

The man, who sustained a dog bite on his thigh, was treated at a hospital before being taken into custody. He was then questioned on suspicion of dangerous driving and failing to stop for police.

On Thursday 20th November 2025, Matthew James Armitage, of Ebor Court, Selby, admitted to the offences at York Magistrates’ Court. He was issued a community order, fined, and ordered to pay court costs totaling £279. He was also disqualified from driving for 12 months and required to complete an extended driving test before regaining his licence.

Traffic Constable Davey Mitchell, who led the pursuit, praised the collaborative effort of all involved and PD Enzo’s performance.

“We are thrilled for PD Enzo who put all his training into practice for the very first time. His handler is also absolutely delighted with him - the body-worn camera footage of the arrest says it all, really!” Mitchell said.

He continued: “We needed Enzo’s help to apprehend the suspect as he was clearly determined to evade capture by driving dangerously in and around Gowthorpe, reaching speeds up to 90mph, going through red traffic lights and contravening solid white lines.

“It was also great teamwork to bring the pursuit to a timely halt by effective use of a stinger device.”

Discussing the driver’s actions, TC Mitchell added: “When interviewed in custody, the driver said he failed to stop as he thought his car insurance had run out. In fact, the policy was still in place, and no other offences were uncovered during the investigation.

“He admitted he had made a big mistake and reacted badly when he saw the police car. Either way, if you drive dangerously on the roads at any time of day or night, we will do everything we can to bring you to justice.”
