Malton library has reopened its doors following a programme of carbon-cutting improvements.

Government public sector decarbonisation funding has been used to replace the windows to make the building more energy-efficient. It has been allocated to improve numerous County Council buildings including schools and care homes.

At the end of October 2020, the library reopened following a major refurbishment which saw the addition of moveable shelving, a dedicated IT space and a new-look children’s area.

County Councillor Greg White, Executive Member for Libraries and Climate Change, said:

"It’s great to see Malton library benefit from these much-needed improvements as it supports our aim to be carbon zero by 2030.

"We have also been able to celebrate the first anniversary of a large internal refurbishment which has been a huge boost for our dedicated staff, volunteers and visitors. We look forward to welcoming returning and new customers into the bright, modern and energy-efficient library."

Chrys Mellor is the Libraries General Manager:

"New windows and the library looking nice from the outside is always important, but when it has the added advantage of lowering energy costs and increasing energy efficiency it's even better.

"It coincides with the fact that we refurbished the interior last year, which was all slightly delayed by the pandemic. We now have a nice interior and exterior to the library!

"It's been a really difficult 18 months or so with closing and reopening because of the pandemic and then refurbishments, but we did manage to have an official reopening.

"The response has been positive and people are pleased that we're reopening again. We have been spending some money on it and creating a nice vicinity in Malton.

"They've got the display of the 'Home Sweet Home' quilt until the 24th November - it's a series of quilts made by carers based on their memories of 2020.

"We are still a safe place to visit, and we'd love people to come and see us".

The opening hours of Malton library are:

Monday, 9.30am to 5pm

Tuesday, 9.30am to 7pm

Wednesday, 9.30am to 5pm

Thursday, closed

Friday, 9.30am to 5pm

Saturday, 9.30am to 12.30pm

Sunday, closed

The library service is reassuring visitors that although coronavirus restrictions have been relaxed, its buildings are a safe place to be and they can return with confidence. Library staff and volunteers are continuing to wear face masks and customers are encouraged to do the same. Hand sanitiser stations are still in use and track and trace is available.
