Disruption across North Yorkshire as train drivers go on strike
Members of the ASLEF Union have walked out in a row over pay
Train drivers from the ASLEF Union say they have got no choice but to go on strike today.
The walk out will bring misery to many passengers and cause huge disruption to services.
Nigel Roebuck who represents workers across Yorkshire, the Humber and the North East explains why they are taking part in the action: "Of course our people, their utility bills, gas, broadband, electricity, everything is going up, this is the third year they have not had a pay rise and it's starting to hit their pockets. We accepted no pay rise through the pandemic even though our members workers everyday, on the front line taking risks".
No Northern trains to run at all
Operator Northern says the strike means it cannot operate any services across its network.
Customers are advised not to try to travel as there will be major disruption across the whole rail network.
In a statement chief operating officer at Northern Tricia Williams told us: “We’re sorry again for the significant disruption and inconvenience this action by ASLEF will cause our customers.
“We all want to see an end to this dispute and hope that a resolution can be found so that we can avoid more disruptive strikes in the future.”
