Linton residents need reassurance over asylum centre cancellation

MP Kevin Hollinrake wants confirmation of shelving of plans

Thirsk and Malton MP Kevin Hollinrake is asking for the Defence Secretary to confirm that Linton on Ouse plans have been scrapped.

Back in July, the Home Office announced proposals for a reception centre for asylum seekers have been shelved.

But those fighting those plans haven't had any formal notice.

Mr Hollinrake is now calling on the Government to issue a formal request.

He claims those who're against the plans - the community, Hambleton District Council and MPs - have been left concerned about the future of the former RAF site.

In a statement on Mr Hollinrake's website, he wrote:

'Many constituents have rightly raised concerns about a lack of formal cancellation regarding the previously proposed asylum reception centre in Linton-on-Ouse. While the Defence Secretary announced the plans were scrapped back in July, I have yet to receive an official confirmation, nor any suggestion on what the site may now be used for.

'This lack of clarity naturally leaves residents in Linton-on-Ouse and the surrounding area extremely concerned. I have therefore written the attached letter to the Home Secretary and Defence Secretary to request a formal response. I will press for a swift response and update constituents as soon as I have more information.'
