Libraries across North Yorkshire are handing out free slippers to older people this winter to help the strain on the NHS. One of the most common causes of falls by older people is loose, worn or backless slippers.

The North Yorkshire Library service are also hosting 'slipper socials' where people can collect their slippers, have a cup of tea and a chat.

Executive member for libraries at North Yorkshire County Council Greg White said: 'Libraries are always looking to support the communities they serve. Slipper socials proved popular earlier in the year, so now we are hosting them in other locations around the county. As well as helping people to avoid falls, so reducing pressure on health and emergency services, the free events are a great way to find out about other valuable services and to pick up information and advice.

'Older people can drop in at any time during the events, when free refreshments will be available. If we run out of some sizes, we will do our best to get more and get them to people after the event.'
