Extra free parking on Northallerton High Street is set to end on Friday (23 April), in line with coronavirus restrictions easing further.

In September 2020, free parking was extended from 30 minutes to an hour, in order to support local businesses and shoppers responding to social distancing measures.

Council officers are now in the process of updating ticket machines in the area, and erecting temporary signs.

A similar process is underway in Knaresborough.

North Yorkshire County Councillor Don Mackenzie, who is responsible for access, said: "As the country sees the continuing lifting of Covid-19 restrictions, it was appropriate for us to review the position regarding these parking arrangements.

"The easing of restrictions supports a return to the normal operation of on-street parking in the two towns to aid traffic management and to offer better turnover of spaces."

However, a review is underway to determine the scope of extending free parking permanently on the High Street, north of Friarage Street.

That work is including Northallerton's Business Improvement District.
