York Uni expert raises concern over building regulation standards in Turkey

The UK's announced more funding for aid in Turkey and Syria after devastating earthquakes left tens of thousands of people dead.

The Foreign Office says 25 million pounds will fund emergency relief- such as tents and blankets for families facing homelessness.

Professor Jo Rose is a senior lecturer in humanitarian aid and development at York University she tells us the damage is devastating: "Some of these buildings are quite newly built, they should have been built up to standards and codes that should have least been able to withstand at least some of the Earthquakes and shocks. Some of the apartment blocks were built as early as 2019 so it's really shocking."

The magnitude 7.8 and 7.5 quakes struck nine hours apart in south-eastern Turkey and Syria on February 6.

At least 33,185 people were killed, with the death toll expected to rise considerably as search teams find more bodies, and towns and cities inhabited by millions reduced to fragments of concrete and twisted metal.
