Cordon lifted after "hand grenade" reported in Selby

UPDATE 4.30pm: Cordon has been lifted

Police say a situation involving a suspected "hand grenade" in Selby has now been resolved, and they've reopened Brayton Barff woods.

It was closed earlier - and the Ministry of Defence were called out - after someone spotted the suspicious item.

Officers say the item was found to be empty.

UPDATE 12.25pm: MOD staff on site

Police have now been joined by Ministry of Defence staff at the site.

Officers are continuing to ask people to avoid the area.

North Yorkshire Police say a member of the public has reported finding what's thought to be a hand grenade near Selby.

The discovery was made in Brayton Barff woods.

Emergency services are attending the scene, and a cordon has been put up.

Members of the public are being asked to stay clear of the area, to allow emergency workers to investigate.
