Olympic gold medal-winning cyclist Chris Boardman is set to have a new government agency - based in York.

It will be called Active Travel England and it'll encourage cyclists and pedestrians.

It comes as ministers pledged £5.5m of investment into cycling and walking.

Chris Boardman MBE said on his twitter:

"We’ll do more than encourage people, we will enable them to get to shops, schools and workplaces under their own steam, by providing high quality, safe joined up routes . Looking forward to it."

Chris Boardman was originally commissioner for Transport for Greater Manchester, and is now shifted roles to the York community, becoming the interim commissioner of the York-based organisation.
