Woman suspected of drink driving after car goes into river in York

A 45 year old woman was rescued by members of the public after her car ended up in the River Ouse on Wednesday afternoon.

Police believe a woman who was driving a car which ended up in the River Ouse in York may have been drink driving.

Her white Seat Leon saloon entered the river near Skeldergate Bridge in the city centre at around 4.30pm on Wednesday afternoon.

The 45 year old local woman was bravely brought to safety be members of the public and taken to hospital for treatment.

Initially it was unclear whether anyone else was in the car when it went into the river, so an intensive search operation was launched.

This was supported by police officers from Regional Underwater Search Team, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue and the York Rescue Boat. Paramedics were on standby throughout.

Thankfully, it has since been confirmed there was nobody else in the car.

Police are investigating the driver in relation to suspected drink-driving and dangerous driving offences.
