Calls for women's health specialist in every GP surgery in North Yorkshire
It's to support women who're going through the menopause.
There are calls for a women's health specialist in EVERY GP surgery in North Yorkshire.
It comes as many suffer in silence during the early stages or are unaware of the changes to their body.
Renni Prelle - from Fulford - set up support group in York, helping women through the process.
But she says more medical help should be available.
Renni says women feel like they should just get on with it - which shouldn't be the case:
"When it comes to the menopause, it shouldn't be like that because so many women struggle, having issues or experiencing many symptoms and it's just not been recognised. Women are just expected do get on with it.
"Some that I've spoken to in our group have even had suicidal thoughts because they're just not themselves - they don't feel they are who they used to be.
"They don't feel listened to or heard - with little or no support - and that really needs to change - massively. More needs to be done to improve this."
In addition, Renni claims better education is needed among health professionals when it comes to treating menopause:
"When GPs train, there isn't just one module about the menopause or women's health. When I was suffering, I had to explain to my GP what I'm looking for. Why do I have to do all the research, when I am the patient and my GP is the expert."
Renni says we all need to be talking about the symptoms to make them more common place.
