Calls for speed limiters to "make North Yorkshire roads safer"

Campaigners want the Government to make it the law that all new vehicles be fitted with the device

Road safety campaigners in North Yorkshire say the Government should change the law so that all new cars are fitted with 'speed limiters'.

It's now mandatory that all vehicles made in the EU must have one. The European Transport Safety Council hopes the technology will reduce road collisions by 30% and deaths by 20%.

The tech alerts drivers when they've crept over the limit and can reduce the engine's power to slow you down.

Ian Conlan is from the North Yorkshire 20 is plenty campaign, he thinks they are a great idea. "One of the key things about adhering to speed limits is peer pressure and seeing other people adhering to it. If you've got someone with a new vehicle and they come down to 20mph, then you've got a queue of cars behind them who also slow down, it's a game changer."

The Government says it hasn't decided on what rules will be introduced in the UK and will be carrying out a review in the coming months.
