Call for North Yorkshire children to be given a break this Summer
There's a warning that there's too much focus on pupils catching up with school work.
“Children should be allowed to be children over the summer holidays” - that's the message from Stuart Carlton at North Yorkshire County Council.
The Corporate Director of Children and Young People’s Services has been sharing his thoughts at the North Yorkshire Local Resilience Forum this week: "They've not seen friends and they're all so tired of it.
"I would like to see a Summer where children are able to play outside with their friends, and get all of that social and emotional interaction that we know is so good for them.
"I understand the national concern around children's education and how much they've lost, but I also think that needs to be balanced: we have to remember that young people have also been isolating.
"A Summer of children outside playing would be fantastic, and come back ready for the new school term in September.
"We then have a whole year for teachers who know the children best to understand where they are with their learning".
Schools returned on Monday (8th March), with safety measures put in place at schools across North Yorkshire.
