Body recovered from River Ouse in search for missing York man

An appeal to find 76-year-old Anthony Atkinson was launched on Tuesday

Police teams in York searching for missing 76-year-old Anthony Atkinson have recovered a body from the River Ouse.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service were contacted by a member of the public at around 2.40pm today (29 July 2021) after noticing a figure in the water between Clifton Bridge and the A1237.

The fire boat crew helped to secure the body while the police Under Water Search Unit arrived from Humberside to make the recovery. This was completed at 5pm.

The York Rescue Boat also assisted the operation.

An appeal was issued on Tuesday to find Mr Atkinson.

A police spokesperson said: "Although the body has not yet been formally identified, it is believed to be Mr Atkinson. His family have been informed and are being supported by the police.

"Police enquiries are continuing to investigate the missing person case and the circumstances of the death."
