Five men have been arrested by police in North Yorkshire after a badger was killed by dog.

Officers were called to reports of poaching in Kilburn, where residents had spotted a 4x4 and high powered torch being used.

North Yorkshire Police said they found the five men by the side of a road with two dogs, who were attacking the badger.

The men then sped off in a black Jeep, leaving the dogs behind, and were found by the A170 a short time later.

Police said: "The two dogs were taken to a secure location to be looked after, and the Jeep was also seized. A dead badger was found at the scene.

"The five suspects, who are from the Stockton-in-Tees area, remain in custody at this time while police enquiries continue."
