Armed police officers will be deployed at large festive events and shopping areas in North Yorkshire, including the York and Harrogate Christmas markets and locations such as York Designer Outlet, over the coming weeks.

These annual deployments are part of measures taken to enhance public safety during the busy festive period, aiming to deter criminal activity, including terrorism.

Chief Inspector Mark Proctor of the Firearms Support Unit said:

"Public safety is our priority, and these deployments provide reassurance while helping to disrupt and deter criminal activity. We’re pleased to welcome back large festive events such as the York and Harrogate Christmas markets, and I urge everyone to remain vigilant. If you see something out of place, don’t delay, contact the police immediately.”

While on patrol, armed officers may seem intimidating, but North Yorkshire Police emphasise that they are friendly and approachable. Where appropriate, officers are happy to chat during their patrols to answer questions or provide reassurance.

These patrols are one of many tactics used by North Yorkshire Police to keep the public safe during busy events, particularly in the festive season when crowds are expected at popular locations like York Designer Outlet and city centres. The visible presence of officers aims to disrupt criminal behaviour and gives reassurance to visitors enjoying the festivities.

The deployment of armed officers is a regular measure to ensure public safety, with North Yorkshire Police encouraging everyone to report any suspicious activity or anything unusual.
