Wigan revellers told to keep an eye on their alcohol tolerance as pubs open
It's amid fears more of us may have developed alcohol dependencies
Charities in Wigan are urging people to keep an eye on their alcohol tolerance levels now that pubs and restaurants fully reopen.
Almost half of the people in the UK admit to having increased their alcohol intake during the pandemic according to the Global Drug Service.
It’s feared they may not notice that they’re becoming more dependent on alcohol when heading out.
Emily Wood is from ‘We Are With You’ which supports people with alcohol and drug issues across the borough, she told us it’s important to pay attention to if our tolerance has changed:
"If you've spent the last year having that little bit more alcohol, your tolerance levels have got higher."
"You can, therefore, consume more alcohol without feeling the effects of it."
"It doesn't mean that it's not affecting your physical and mental health but you don't feel it in the same way."
"That, in turn, means that you might get that other picture of Long Island Iced Tea and increase your alcohol intake."
"That's how it starts."
"Nobody who's alcohol dependent starts off on that level of alcohol dependency."
"People start off with a few which increases over time and it might be that eventually, they're drinking a litre of vodka a day, no one starts off with that."
"If I drunk what somebody who is deemed alcohol-dependent from our service drinks, I would probably be out of it."
"It's your tolerance levels, those tolerance levels can change depending on your consumption of alcohol."
