The family of a man who died after his mobility scooter was hit by a car in Atherton have paid tribute.

On Friday afternoon, a car was travelling along Flapper Fold Lane when it collided with a mobility scooter as it crossed the carriageway, resulting in the 88-year-old becoming unseated and knocked to ground.

Despite the best efforts of emergency services, Joe Shaw sadly passed away in hospital later the same evening.

In a statement, his family have described him as a “much-loved father, grandfather and great-grandfather" and say he was well known in the local community.

“Joe died surrounded by his loved ones and will be sadly missed. He is now back with his beloved Rita.”

A 30-year-old woman was initially arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving and driving a vehicle whilst under the influence of a specified drug following a positive roadside test.

She has since been bailed pending further enquiries.
