People are being warned of traffic problems in parts of Lancashire this morning, after the M61 was shut because of a serious crash.

Emergency services say they were called to the motorway, between Chorley and Horwich, in the early hours after receiving reports of an accident involving "multiple vehicles".

Both carriageways were closed for a time, but the northbound side is back open.

National Highways say it's likely to be shut throughout the morning rush, as police carry out investigation works.

On their website, they said: "Lancashire police are leading the response to the incident and are in the process of carrying out investigation work at the scene.

"National Highways Traffic Officers and contractors are in attendance and assisting with strategic closures on the approach.

"Due to the nature of the incident there are no times for the reopening of the carriageway at this stage."

A diversion is in place along the A6, through Adlington and Blackrod.
