More than half of Wigan now almost COVID free

21 of Wigan's 40 neighbourhoods reported 'suppressed' infection rates in the most recent week of data

More than half of areas in Wigan reported no coronavirus cases for a whole week according to the most recent data.

For data protection reasons, if an area reports less than 3 cases of the virus in a week, no cases are revealed and the number of cases is said to be 'suppressed'.

For the seven days up to the 15th of April, the following areas reported no cases of the virus:

  • Standish South
  • Aspull & Red Rock
  • Beech Hill
  • Wigan Marylebone & Bottling Wood
  • New Springs
  • Wigan Central
  • Wigan East
  • Laithwaite & Marsh Green
  • Pemberton North
  • Pemberton South
  • Wigan South
  • Orrell & Longshaw
  • Worsley Mesnes & Hawkley
  • Winstanley
  • Atherton South East & Tyldesley West
  • Tyldesley North
  • Astley, Blackmoor & Mosley Common
  • Leigh East & Higher Folds
  • Ashton-in-Makerfield East
  • Ashton-in-Makerfield West

Which areas of Wigan are reporting the most cases?

Leigh South reported the most cases with 9 people testing positive for the virus in the seven days up until the 15th of April.

Abram & Bickershaw came next with 8 followed by Leigh North and Lowton Common which both reported 7 cases.

Ince-in-Makerfield, Hindley East and Atherton North all reported 6 cases each with Hindley Green, Atherton South West and Golborne each reporting 5.

Hindley West, Platt Bridge & Spring View, Tyldesley South, Leigh West and Lowton reported 4 cases each.

Finally Standish North, Leigh Central, Ashton-in-Makerfield North and Leigh South East reported 3 cases.

The entirety of Wigan reported 96 cases of the virus in the seven days up until the 15th of April.

For comparison, during the most recent wave, in the seven days up until the 21st of January, the town reported 1127 people testing positive.

It's estimated in every 100,000 people, 38 currently have the virus in Wigan, that's down from 47 the previous week.
