Wigan football fans urged to enjoy Euros safely
Health officials in Wigan are urging people to get tested for coronavirus if they’re planning to meet up to watch the euros at the weekend.
Football fans in Wigan are being urged to stick to the rules and stay safe as England kicks off at the Euros this weekend.
People have been advised not to meet indoors and keep travel in and out of the area to a minimum to tackle the spread of the variant.
Wigan's health bosses are also saying if you are going to meet indoor, make sure it's well ventilated by keeping windows and doors open.
Lynne Calvert is part of the council's Public Health team. She told us it's vital people keep playing their part:
"What we're seeing is that a lot of the onward transmission that we pick up is that it is households meeting - when that happens, very often the contacts then become the positive cases.
"It is easier to catch this variant of the virus than the original one.
"We're so near to the point where we can get to living with Covid rather than responding to Covid and it's about stopping that onward transmission as much as we possibly can so that we don't have further variations in the virus."
She's also asking people to get a test before they head out to watch any games.
They're readily available across the borough.
They're available from various libraries, leisure centres and pharmacies in the area. You can find your nearest one here.
Lynne added: "You can do it the night before you're going or the morning and it just gives you that added reassurance that you're not going to pass it onto your family or your friends."
