Blackpool’s most historic landmark is to be lit up in honour of the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) and their efforts and hard work during 2020.

The Tower will glow green to represent the NWAS uniform, along with the message “Thank You NWAS” and will shine between 4pm and 10pm on Tuesday 22nd December.

The tribute has been organised in conjunction with Blackpool Council and is to show support and praise for all NWAS staff and volunteers, along with family and friends who have been behind them throughout the pandemic.

NWAS Chief Executive Daren Mochrie said:

“This year has been one of the most challenging any of us have seen.

“I am however incredibly proud of all our teams for their dedication and professionalism shown during this time, and in spite of the extra pressure we continue to provide a first class service to the people of the North West.

“The pandemic has been catastrophic for our patients and their families, creating anxiety and leaving many in isolation. For us, it has meant significant spikes of very high demand, dramatic changes to the way we work, the constant wearing of PPE; the cancellation of all non-essential events and activities, increased use of new technologies with back office staff working from home, and very sadly, the death of two of our colleagues.

“This is a fabulous tribute and I’m delighted to see NWAS recognised in lights. The support shown by the people of Blackpool and across the region has been amazing. I know it has meant so much to everyone and I can’t thank you enough.”

Cllr Jo Farrell, Blackpool Council's Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, said:

"Throughout the pandemic, despite all the disruption and uncertainty, the ambulance crews, 999 and 111 call centre staff, patient transport teams, and other support services have gone above and beyond in order to keep people safe. Emergency services personnel continue to risk their own safety on a daily basis to protect others.

"The Tower lights up on 22 December for each and every one of you. Your efforts ensure that this critical service continues to operate – the whole of Blackpool appreciates the work you do."
