A West Yorkshire Police officer has been given a community sentence, after being found guilty of harassment for following and shouting at a woman in Halifax last year.
33 year old PC Raza Mahmood, who is based in Calderdale, was found guilty of one count at Sheffield Magistrates Court, where he was sentenced earlier today.
He will serve a 12 month community order and have to carry out 80 hours unpaid work.
The judge has also imposed a five year restraining order preventing him contacting the victim.
It comes after an incident on March 26 2024 when a woman, who was pushing a child in a pushchair, reported a man had shouted at her from a vehicle.
He returned a further four times to follow her, although the victim was able to remember the licence plate.
It later emerged PC Mahmood, who was off duty at the time, was behind the wheel.
After PC Mahmood was convicted Detective Chief Superintendent Tanya Wilkins, of West Yorkshire Police, said: “It is clear from the victim’s account, and that of her partner who she called in a distressed state, the concern that they both felt for her and their child’s safety as a result of this officer’s actions.
“Protecting women and girls from violence and the fear of violence is a priority for West Yorkshire Police and for a police officer to harass a member of the public in this way is very concerning and something that we take extremely seriously.
“PC Mahmood is currently suspended from duty, and we will proceed with misconduct proceedings following the conclusion of this court case.”
