Website Helps Lonely People Find Company at Christmas

Local families are being asked to open up their homes to those facing Christmas day alone

Leeds families are being urged to help someone escape loneliness over the festive period.

A website has been launched to pair up those who would otherwise be alone with residents who are happy to make an extra space at their table.

Sarah Carmody from Adel is behind the site, and says they do get a good response:

“We have families with children who are willing to have somebody round for Christmas. We have people who are on their own due to things like family breakups or bereavement and people who have historically spent Christmas alone but don’t want to do it this year.

“It’s just nice to match them together and know that they won’t be on their own and unhappy about it.”

Sarah set up the project two years ago when she identified a gap in the market for a site helping people who are facing spending the day alone.

She says Christmas can be a time when bad memories feel more painful:

“If people have had bereavement or a breakup that feeling can intensify during the festive season. Things like suicide rates are higher, and I just feel there are so many nice people out there who are willing to do nice things – so why not get them all together?”
